Bookeen

bookeen

Bookeen is a French company that publishes and markets e-readers including the Cybook Gen3, Cybook Opus, Cybook Orizon and Odyssey. Pioneers in the field, the co-founders of Bookeen, Laurent Picard and Michaël Dahan (ESPCI engineer), former employees of Cytale, participated in the development of one of the first reading devices in 1998. They founded Bookeen in 2003, taking over some of Cytale’s assets and continuing the development of e-books.

In 2011, Bookeen launched its own digital bookstore, BookeenStore.com, with digital books (ebooks) in French at first.

In 2013, Bookeen partners with Carrefour to create 2 e-readers under the trade name “Nolim by Carrefour”.

In 2019, Tite-Live, a provider of management software and digital services dedicated to bookstores, enters the capital of Bookeen.

E-readers produced

Bookeen produces the Cybook Gen3, Cybook Opus, Cybook Orizon, Cybook Odyssey, Cybook Odyssey frontlight, and Cybook Odyssey HD frontlight models. In 2017, the models are Cybook Muse, Cybook Muse Light, Cybook Muse Frontlight, Cybook Muse HD, and a larger format model (8 inches instead of 6): Cybook Ocean.

The models sold by Carrefour are called NolimBook and NolimBook+ and correspond respectively to the Cybook Odyssey (without lighting) and Cybook Odyssey Frontlight (with lighting) models. The shell is identical, except for the color, but the electronic part is different. The software integrated in the NoLim version has also been strongly modified: for example, it is impossible for the user to change the orientation of the tablet, nor to search by folder in the reader. Nevertheless, it is possible (but not official) to install the firmware of the Cybook Muse.
